Fantastic GCSE results at Headington Rye Oxford

Despite logging in online to receive their results, many chose to come in to school to share the happy moment with teachers and friends.

In all 37.5% of all GCSEs taken were graded at 9, the highest possible level. Nine girls achieved 9s or A*s in all their subjects, with 10 girls achieving 10 or more nines. A total of 34 girls – a fifth of the year group – achieved 8, 9 or A* in all their subjects.

The proportion of all exams taken graded at the equivalent of 8 or above was 61 per cent while 78 per cent were at a 7 or higher, the equivalent of an old ‘A’ grade.

Sophie, who will study Maths, Chemistry, Philosophy and Psychology at Headington Sixth Form after achieving ten 9s was among those collecting her results. She said: “I’m very pleased to have got all 9s for my GCSEs. A 9 in English was particularly a surprise and I’m so happy to have got a 9 in Further Maths.”

Among the highest achievers was Victoria, who achieved 11 9 grades along with an A in the Freestanding Maths Qualification and an A in AS Economics.

More than 50 per cent of those pupils taking Art, Latin, Physics and Religious Studies achieved a 9 grade.  In Further Maths, 78 per cent achieved an 8 or 9, and in History 71 per cent achieved at least an 8, while Textiles saw 92 per cent achieving a 7 or higher.

There were also impressive results across the languages, with 89 per cent of those taking Spanish achieving an 8 or 9 and 95 per cent of those taking German achieving at least a 7. The School has a diverse international intake and supports pupils to take GCSEs in their native languages. This year that included Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish – with 100 per cent of those pupils achieving the top 9 grade, while 91 per cent of those taking Chinese achieved the highest grade.

Rower Heidi, who recorded 9s in nine of her subjects and one 8, plus distinction in the one year Philosophy award, said: “It has been challenging but rewarding to continue with a demanding rowing schedule alongside my studies. The hard work has paid off and I’m very pleased with my results.”

She will study Biology, Chemistry, Economics and History A Levels at Headington Sixth Form.

Eloise will take up a Drama scholarship in the Sixth Form and was delighted with her string of 8s and 9s. She said: “I’m definitely pleased with my results and really surprised, in a good way, by an 8 and two 9s in the Sciences.”

Alongside the programme of GCSEs, pupils are encouraged to supplement and broaden their studies with a one-year qualification. This year every pupil taking the Headington Rye Oxford Award in Global Citizenship or the Headington Rye Oxford Award in Philosophy achieved at least a merit, while 57 per cent of those taking the Headington Rye Oxford Award in Creative Writing achieved a distinction. 98 per cent of those taking the Finance Award achieved a merit, the highest available mark.

Headmistress Caroline Jordan said: “It has been wonderful getting to know these girls as they mature and start to specialise in the subjects which interest them. 

“They have worked so incredibly hard and should be very proud of all that they have achieved. I’d like to also thank all the teaching and support staff for everything they have done to help these young women reach their potential.

“I very much look forward to seeing what great things are ahead of them as we continue to work with them in the Sixth Form!”
