Epsom College in Malaysia, A Winning Combination of Sport & Academics

Located just 45 minutes outside of KL city centre and 15 minutes from KLIA, Epsom provides a true British boarding school experience – an on-campus community feel, engagement with academic staff in a pastoral setting and a distraction-free academic environment – to its day, weekday and full-boarding students. Parents have discovered the benefits of space, time, safety, adventure and all-round success for their children at Epsom, safe in the knowledge that all their needs will be catered for.

Why Epsom Malaysia?

Epsom Malaysia’s curriculum augments nearly 200 years’ of tradition and academic excellence at Epsom College UK with practical instruction that is culturally and contextually relevant to a fast-growing Asia. Epsom promotes equal proficiency in English and Mandarin, the global languages spoken by more than a third of the world’s population, through an English Mandarin Immersion Programme for prep school students. The prep school curriculum is supplemented by contextually relevant teaching such as the Singapore Maths learning strategy and as students progress through the school, they are encouraged to achieve conversational Mandarin fluency.

Whilst they are at school, students follow the British national curriculum and complete their IGCSEs and A-Levels. Living on campus encourages the development of independence that day education paths cannot always offer, with the help of a supportive network of peers, tutors, Housemistress or Housemaster and school staff. Boarders are ultimately responsible for the actions they take and build a sense of personal responsibility that many do not develop until at least college or university age.

Educational Support

Epsom offers students a truly holistic school experience through a Future Ready curriculum that delivers excellent academic results – in 2022, 1 in 2 IGCSE students received 7 or more A* or A grades and 63% of A-Level students received  A* or A grades – alongside entry to top universities such as Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, and Stanford. Epsom also actively facilitates internships at Malaysia’s most successful companies and organisations to allow students to engage in real-world application of classroom learning.

Bespoke, highly personalised learning with small teacher to student ratios and a 24/7 open door policy for academic and pastoral support sets Epsom apart. For students from English as an Additional Language (EAL) backgrounds, this means receiving specialist transition classes as they progress through the school to accelerate their English Proficiency. The Epsom Advantage and the American Admissions Programmes provide each student with a clearly defined roadmap that outlines different objectives students must meet in the lead up to a successful application to a top-tier university. For those interested in applying to Oxbridge, the Oxbridge Alumni Mentorship Programme enables students to gain an insight into what admission tutors like to see, whilst learning how to convey their skills, motivation and long-term goals in an interview. These mentorship initiatives help Epsom to foster and develop closer bonds with students.

Sport and Academics – An Integrated Curriculum

Epsom College in Malaysia is quickly establishing itself as a sporting centre par excellence. The school recognises the importance of sports as a powerful tool that instils values such as the merit of hard work, teamwork, risk-taking,sportsmanship and leadership. Epsom pupils are spoilt for choice when it comes to sporting endeavours on its 50-acre campus with state-of-the-art facilities that include a multipurpose indoor sports centre (with 3 professional squash courts), a FIFA-standard 4G Astroturf Football Pitch, a newly-built tennis complex, an indoor and outdoor hockey pitch, rugby pitch, cricket pitch and swimming pool. With university applications abroad becoming increasingly competitive year after year, an athletic ability can be a differentiating factor in a pupil’s profile against a broad pool of applicants – Epsom provides an ecosystem for a holistic education that involves playing sport at a high-performance level.

Epsom launched the Mouratoglou Tennis Programme in 2022 in partnership with Patrick Mouratoglou, founder of the Mouratoglou Academy and one of the most influential coaches in tennis. As Serena Williams’ full-time tennis coach, Patrick Mouratoglou has been credited with the training and development of several young rising stars including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Coco Gauff, Holger Rune and Alexei Popyrin. The Programme is a seamless blend of academics and tennis and is one of Epsom’s many sports initiatives.

Participants enjoy a newly built tennis complex with ITF (International Tennis Federation)-compliant outdoor and indoor courts, including clay courts which are a rare find in Asia.

Epsom will soon be launching the ECM Golf Academy which will focus on providing their students with the tools and resources required to realise their full golfing potential, alongside peak physical and mental performance. The appointed Head Coach, Travis Van Dijk, an International PGA Player Of The Year winner, has over 17 years of experience developing elite junior players, including 15 youth players in Malaysia who were granted golf scholarships at established universities in the United States. Facilities at the ECM Golf Academy will include a 5 acre on-site training facility with a driving range and indoor/outdoor teaching studios, as well as access to an 18 hole golf course 2-3 times weekly. For keen footballers, Epsom will have a football academy in partnership with La Liga –  the top professional football division of the Spanish football league system in which teams such as Real Madrid and F.C. Barcelona compete in. La Liga coaches reside on site to ensure in-campus training and skills on our FIFA approved 4G Astroturf football pitch are continuously available outside of school hours. All of these sports academies will operate on Epsom’s expansive 50-acre campus and further enhance the collegiate living-learning experience and community feel. Not to be missed, students enrolling in or transitioning into Years 6 and 7 will be given the opportunity to take part and cultivate a stronger appreciation of the football, tennis and golf academies from September 2023 onwards, at no additional cost.

Enrichment Programmes

An established and vibrant Super Curricular programme educates students to be principled, moral, bright and conscientious citizens of the world by focusing on holistic development. Students are encouraged to take positions of responsibility by leading after-school societies – anything from chess to still-life drawing – which helps to develop talent and general interests beyond academics and the classroom. They are also active participants in the Epsom Live Talks series, where attendees such as David Dufrenois of Airbus, Tan Sri Tommy Thomas (former Attorney General of Malaysia), Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz (former Minister of International Trade and Industry) and Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, founder of Capital A (formerly known as AirAsia) have been invited to Epsom to provide their experience-based insights. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, will soon be in attendance.

Webinar

Kate Carden-Brown, Director of Admissions and Head of Higher Education, Epsom College in Malaysia talks Fiona Murchie, Managing Editor of Relocate Global about the importance of helping students become future ready, by expanding their horizons in a multitude of ways.

Health and Nutrition

Epsom promotes, nurtures and sustains healthy eating habits in their students, working alongside nutritionists and dieticians to develop recipes that are well balanced, nutritionally dense and delicious (all whilst minimising the use of oil, sugar and sodium). Wholegrains, fresh tropical fruit and a fully stocked salad and sandwich bar are mealtime staples, together with a wide-variety of freshly cooked protein and complex carbohydrates for lunch and dinner. As food diversity plays a major role in proper nutrition and development, students are encouraged to eat a variety of food and are educated on the importance of vitamins, minerals and hydration.
