Astronomy: inspiring students to reach for the academic stars

During World Space Week (4 to 10 October 2025). OIC Brighton are using astronomy to support their students’ learning and development.

World Space Week (04 – 10 October) is an annual celebration of ‘science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition’. Astronomy itself is one of the oldest natural sciences in the world. From timekeeping to navigation to agricultural planning to spiritual practices, astronomy has shaped societies across the world, so it was no surprise that the United Nations recognised the importance of space education in 1999.In a school setting, astronomy connects scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical (STEM) principles through engaging, practical projects. Studying the night sky is such a powerful tool for inspiring curiosity and supporting academic and personal development that, at OIC Brighton, we have introduced our own observatory and astrophysics club. Using the observatory’s powerful telescopes — a Dwarf 3 and SeeStar S50 — and robotic telescopes located in Chile, the Canary Islands, and Australia, our students will have opportunities to study celestial objects from the comfort of our campus.
