A leading school in Germany
The Bavarian International School (BIS) is a community of learners, working together to bring out the best in young people, within a caring and international environment. BIS students are supported to become global citizens with outstanding language and communication skills, an intercultural mindset, and a deep understanding of digital technology and modern collaboration.
BIS on two campuses in Munich-Schwabing and Haimhausen is a community of over 1,270 learners and 170 education leaders, working together to bring out the best in young people from over 68 nations. BIS students are supported to become global citizens and future changemakers with outstanding language and communication skills, an intercultural mindset, and a deep understanding of digital technology and modern collaboration.
BIS is the only international school in Germany offering all four programmes of the International Baccalaureate (PYP, MYP, DP, CP) and only international school in Germany offering 3 scholarships, each from Grade 9 – 12. As a private, non-profit, all-day school, BIS ranks among the best international schools (IB Diploma score average: 37 points in 2021, 36 points in 2022).
High-tech learning environments house over 1,270 students from over 68 nations.English is the language of instruction at both campuses, but BIS also offers German, Spanish, French, Japanese and Mandarin as main languages, as well as over a dozen languages in the Home Language Programme.
The caring culture of BIS is defined by additional guidance for students at every turn: language and learning support, mentors, school counsellors, and university and career counsellors.
Students are encouraged to develop themselves outside of the classroom as well, by taking part in one of 80 after school activities, e.g. sports, arts, music, drama, multimedia, design tech, engineering, Eco School projects, Model United Nations, The Duke of Edinburgh´s International Award and much more.
In 2021, BIS celebrated its 30th anniversary. The next chapter will include the funding and building of a new 25 million Euro campus building in Haimhausen, the upcoming Creativity & Innovation Centre (CIC).
A leading school in Germany
Bavarian International School (BIS) in Munich and Haimhausen once again confirmed its position as one of the leading international schools in Germany. With an average score of 36 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), the 78 students from 23 different nations performed very well (equivalent to 2.0 in the German Abitur system, Bavarian average score in 2022: 2.15) – with a 99% passing rate. All ten students of the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP) successfully completed their exams as well.
The strong results of each BIS cohort are all the more remarkable given the school’s highly inclusive approach to admitting new students.
BIS is the only international school in Germany to offer all four International Baccalaureate Organization programmes (PYP, MYP, DP, CP). The private, non-profit, all-day school with two campuses in Haimhausen and Munich-Schwabing serves children and adolescents from kindergarten starting at age three (Early Childhood) through graduation in Grade 12. In the upcoming 2022-23 school year, BIS expects a record of more than 1,200 students from over 60 nations.
Academic excellence
In the graduating Class of 2022, 18 students scored more than 40 points (out of a maximum of 45), which is equivalent to an average grade of 1.3 in the German Abitur system – two of them even scored 44 points. 43 of the 78 BIS students achieved bilingual IB Diplomas.
“This cohort is a very special one, because it experienced the entire two final years in grades 11 and 12 completely in times of the Corona pandemic – and in addition several months of the Russian war against Ukraine. 40 displaced students were integrated at BIS during this time. The Class of 2022 has shown particular perseverance, resilience, flexibility, and creativity, and has experienced innovativenew ways of teaching and learning. These are strengths that each individual will take with them on their individual journeys,” said Dr. Chrissie Sorenson, Head of School and Executive Board of BIS.
She expressed her gratitude and congratulations not only to the students, but especially to the teaching team and administrative staff for their first-class work in difficult times. Together, they have done a wonderful job of continuing to bring the BIS motto to life: Believe. Inspire. Succeed.
Ticket to the best universities
With the IB degrees (DP & CP), students can study at the best universities around the world as well as in Germany. As is the case almost every year, the paths taken by BIS students are extraordinarily diverse, as exemplary fields of study show: Aerospace Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Neuroscience, Global Law, Economics, Online culture, Art & Media, Psychology, Film Directing, Architecture, Chemistry and Game Art & 3D Animation.
Still other students choose a gap year or internships for example, at a social project in Tanzania, at an Animal Rescue Center or at VOGUE magazine in London.
Largest graduating class at BIS – 34.9 points as IB DP average score
100 students in the Class of 2024 / Average IB Diploma score almost 5 points higher than worldwide median.
With 34.9 points, the average score of BIS graduates in the IB Diploma (DP) is once again almost five points above the global median (30.32). 18% of the Class of 2024 achieved 40 points (out of 45) or more (40 points is equal to an Abitur grade of 1.3), with one BIS student scoring the top grade of 45. 41% completed the bilingual diploma and the pass rate was 97.6% (80% worldwide). With a total of 100 students, Bavarian International School (BIS) had the largest graduating class in its 33-year history.85 students started the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP), 12 students entered the IB Career-related Programme (IB CP/Pass rate 91.7%) and three students chose the High School Diploma. BIS students are part of 2.5 million students at approximately 5,500 IB Worlds Schools in 156 countries. Future skills and values
“We are extremely proud of our graduating Class of 2024 and wish them all the best on their individual journeys, equipped with future skills, values, open-mindedness and empathy. The IB DP scores make us all the more proud as we are a non-selective school. Unlike state schools, we do not have a required entry grade of 2.33 when transferring to Secondary School,” explains Dr Chrissie Sorenson, Head of School & Executive Board of BIS.
Even though not all graduates have yet decided on their future path – some have opted for gap years or internships – it is already clear that 44 students with IB DP have been offered a place at their first choice of university. 21 BIS students have successfully applied for a scholarship.
Tickets to the best universities
According to the current status, the BIS students will study at universities in around a dozen countries, for example Imperial College London, University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Toronto, University College London, Duke University, New York University, University of Edinburgh, Technical University Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, University of California, San Diego or King’s College London. The courses are as diverse and individual as the Class of 2024 – here are just a few examples: Applied Mechatronic Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Business Management, Computer Science, Creative Writing, Games Technology, Cyber Security, Drama, Design, International Relations, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Mathematics, Media and Communications, Medicine, Microbiology, Psychology, Software Engineering.
