Copenhagen International School: Educating champions of a just and sustainable world.

Nestled on a picturesque peninsula in Nordhavn, with over 1,200 blue-green solar panels reflected in the shimmering waters of Copenhagen Harbour, lies Copenhagen International School (CIS). This vibrant institution, home to 900 students and a dedicated team of 190 teachers and staff, is more than just a school—it’s a gateway to a multicultural reality and a digital future. Founded 60 years ago, CIS has evolved from a small international school for expatriates into a beacon of education that seamlessly blends old-world values with modern-day challenges.

A Legacy Rooted in Global Ideals

CIS’s journey began in the early 1960s, a time when the world was on the cusp of rapid globalization. The school was initially established to serve the children of expatriates working with international organizations, particularly as Copenhagen became a hub for the United Nations with the opening of the first global warehouse for UNICEF. Over the decades, CIS has remained deeply connected to its roots, with the UN continuing to be the primary employer of many parents whose children attend the school. This connection is not merely historical; it is foundational, deeply embedded in the school’s ethos.

At CIS, there is a strong belief in the transformative power of education to shape a better world. The school’s values, which reflect the security, respect, and humanity characteristic of Denmark, are reinforced by integrating the UN’s Global Goals into both teaching and activities. The aim is to inspire students to become the heroes of tomorrow, equipped to make a meaningful impact on the world.

A Campus Designed for the Future

The current campus in Nordhavn is the fifth location in CIS’s history, and it marks a significant milestone in the school’s development. Designed by C.F. Møller Architects, the campus is a model of sustainability, with its striking solar panels providing a portion of the school’s energy needs. But the commitment to sustainability goes far beyond architecture. It is woven into the fabric of daily life at CIS, where students are encouraged to engage with environmental issues both in and out of the classroom.CIS is equipped with world-class facilities in sports, music, theater, and science, all of which promote creativity and development in unique ways. More importantly, the school focuses on creating an environment where sustainability and community are central themes. Students are not only learning about the world but are also being taught how to change it for the better.CIS-sport

Education for a Complex, Digital World

As one of the six founding schools of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in 1969, CIS has always been at the forefront of innovative education. The IB program is renowned for its rigorous academic standards and its emphasis on developing well-rounded, globally-minded individuals. At CIS, the IB curriculum is not just about achieving high academic results; it’s about fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a deep understanding of global issues.

In today’s rapidly changing world, CIS recognizes that education must evolve to meet new challenges. We actively use a number of digital tools and platforms in our teaching and this not only strengthens our students academically but also helps them develop essential digital skills with a focus on safety, privacy, and cyberbullying. We believe in a holistic approach to education, where learning through play and interdisciplinary teaching are key components. This approach helps students develop collaboration, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think critically.

By integrating current global themes and multicultural perspectives into the curriculum, CIS ensures that students are prepared for the complexities of the modern world. Our goal is to develop self-confident and curious individuals who can thrive in a modern and complex reality and contribute to a better world.CIS-science

Sustainability and Diversity: Cornerstones of the Curriculum

Sustainability is not just a buzzword at CIS; it is a core principle that permeates every aspect of school life. From hands-on projects like growing vegetables and reducing paper waste to in-depth work on the school’s CO2 strategy, sustainability is a living, breathing part of the educational experience at CIS.

Sustainability has been a completely natural focus for several years and now it has become part of the curriculum with themes such as biodiversity, renewable energy, waste reduction, and the human impact on the environment. Our 4th graders, for example, are involved in a pilot project to sort and recycle more of the school’s waste. This hands-on experience is crucial in helping them understand the real-world implications of what they learn in the classroom.

In addition to environmental sustainability, CIS is deeply committed to promoting social principles through its DEIJB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging) initiatives. These principles are not just theoretical; they are actively practiced within the school community. Policies on discrimination and bullying have been updated, and the school has launched various initiatives to strengthen students’ sense of belonging and community engagement. By integrating DEIJB into the school’s core identity, CIS creates a more meaningful and relevant academic foundation that not only strengthens communities but also prepares students to navigate a multicultural and constantly evolving world.cis-flags

Preparing Students for a Global Future

The IB Diploma program at CIS, which is equivalent to a traditional Danish high school education, is the final step before students embark on their journey into the wider world. It is a world that is increasingly interconnected, thanks to globalization and technological advancements. Preparing students for this reality is a complex task, one that CIS takes seriously.

Today’s young people are navigating a world that has undergone significant changes. With globalization and new technologies forging unprecedented connections between people, societies, and economies, it has become essential to educate students to thrive in a multicultural and rapidly evolving world. The school’s implementation of DEIJB is a key part of this approach, designed to equip students with the skills and understanding needed to succeed in a globalized future.

By recognizing and celebrating each student’s unique identity, CIS promotes a vibrant and inclusive school culture. This culture is the foundation upon which our students build the courage and confidence they need to make a difference as future leaders and decision-makers.

A Rich History of Excellence

Copenhagen International School’s history is a testament to its commitment to excellence and innovation. From its humble beginnings in 1963, when a group of expatriate parents rented a room to each just 12 students, CIS has grown into a world-class institution. The school was officially named Copenhagen International School in 1968, and in 1969, it became one of the six founding members of the International Baccalaureate. Over the years, CIS has continued to expand its programs and facilities, always with a focus on providing the best possible education for its students.

The school’s timeline is marked by significant milestones that reflect its ongoing commitment to diversity, academic excellence, and community engagement. In 1973, CIS became the second school in Europe to be accredited by the European Council of International Schools. In 1987, the school established a preschool program, and in 1993, it merged with Copenhagen International Junior School, moving to a new location in Hellerup. The introduction of the IB Middle Years program in 1996 and the IB Primary Years program in 2000 further solidified CIS’s reputation as a leader in international education.CIS-playgroundThe move to the Nordhavn campus in 2017, with its state-of-the-art facilities and emphasis on sustainability, marked the beginning of a new chapter in CIS’s history. Today, the school continues to set new standards in international education, with a record number of enrolled students and a growing reputation as a school that not only prepares students for academic success but also equips them to make a positive impact on the world.

Copenhagen International School is much more than an educational institution; it is a community that nurtures the next generation of global citizens. With a curriculum that emphasizes sustainability, diversity, and digital literacy, CIS prepares its students to navigate the complexities of the modern world with confidence and integrity. As the school celebrates its 60th anniversary, it remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a learning environment that is as inclusive and dynamic as the world its students will soon lead.

The future is bright for the students of CIS, who are not only equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed but also inspired to make a difference in the world. In a rapidly changing global landscape, CIS stands as a beacon of hope, guiding its students toward a future where they can truly be the heroes of tomorrow.
