Rugby School Japan held their annual Wellbeing Day in September.

Nurturing the Whole Person: Wellbeing at the Heart of Rugby School Japan

At Rugby School Japan (RSJ), education is about more than academic achievement—it’s about developing the whole person. Central to this mission is the school’s “Whole Person, Whole Point” philosophy, which places wellbeing on equal footing with intellectual growth. This commitment came vividly to life during RSJ’s recent Wellbeing Day, a dedicated space in the school calendar that prioritises emotional health, connection, and personal growth for every member of the community.

A Community Grounded in Wellbeing

The annual Wellbeing Day at Rugby School Japan (RSJ) serves as a powerful symbol of the school’s values. Far from being a token gesture, the event underscores RSJ’s belief that wellbeing is a foundational element of education. The day encouraged students and staff alike to pause, reflect, and engage in activities that promote mental and emotional health.

Inspired by Visible Wellbeing

RSJ’s approach draws from Professor Lea Waters’ Visible Wellbeing framework, which offers a practical model for fostering wellbeing in educational settings. The framework’s six domains—strengths, emotional management, attention and awareness, relationships, coping, and habits and goals—guide the school’s efforts to support both pupils and staff in flourishing beyond academic metrics. This aligns seamlessly with RSJ’s broader educational mission: to shape confident, self-aware individuals who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to society. At RSJ, education is not just about knowledge acquisition—it’s about character development and personal growth.
